191 - Charles Erdman Richter German-French (1745-1829) Late 18th Century Louis XV Tulipwood and Kingwood Veneered Marble Topped Semanier. Signed Stamped C. Richter Twice at Left and Right Fronts Below Marble. Bronze Chutes, Sabots and Pulls Cleaned. Overall in Very Good Condition, With French Polish. German born ébéniste, Richter who was born at Saxe, Schmeideberg was living in Paris in 1781, the year in which he was married. He had a workshop in rue Moreau but then later moved to rue Traversière where he remained until 1821. His production included a wide range of furniture from secrétaires, consoles, and bureaux à cylinder to guéridons and various types of tables. The majority of his furniture was worked in mahogany with restrained gilt bronze mounts such as a small Louis XVI meuble d’appui with double doors, which is now housed in the Jones Collection, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. In addition to such decoration he also produced pieces with fine marquetry, such as a Louis XVI secrétaire inlaid with panels featuring a vase of flowers and floral bouquets, (illustrated in Pierre Kjellberg, “Le Mobilier Français de XVIIIe Siècle”, 1989, p. 693). With an illustrious clientele, his patrons included Monsieur (Louis XVI’s brother, who in 1814 was crowned Louis XVIII) as well as the Garde-Meuble Impérial in 1811. In addition Richter often supplied fellow ébénistes with certain pieces, most notably Jean-Gotlieb Frost, the pupil and successor to the renowned ébéniste David Roentgen. Charles Guillaume Diehl set up his business in Paris at 170 rue Saint-Martin in 1840 to produce small pieces of furniture such as sewing tables. He was listed for the first time in the 1850 Trade Almanach. In 1855, he participated in the Universal Exposition where he obtained a bronze medal. Between 1855 and 1885 he opened cabinetmaking factories at 16, then 21 and lastly 19 rue Michel-le-Comte in Paris. His workshops, located at 39 rue Saint-Sébastien in Paris, employed over 600 people in 1870. Diehl became a naturalized French citizen in 1872. He was out of competition in 1878 and died circa 1885. By the middle of the century, Jeanselme had become one of the most important cabinetmakers in Paris as well as Fournisseur du Mobilier de la Couronne (Furnisher to the Crown) under Louis-Philippe.
